Once again, defense was the hallmark of Herlong’s win as the Lady Vikings limited Elk Creek to just ten points through the first three quarters of play. Greenville Basketball and the Philosophy of Honor and Respect

Greenville – 16

Again, as with Quincy, we’ve been provided copius opportunity to practice against full-court presses—- even when down by 30 points or more!

Portola’s ball-handling & rebounding skill levels were far above ours.  Mostly due to the full court press.  Portola was easily on their way to scoring 100 with a 48-14 at the half.   We decided to hold the ball & utilize the shot-clock throughout the 2nd half, which negated our own scoring, hence the 70-16 final.  Several fans & family supporters asked why they continued pressing with such a large lead.  Of course the answer was; 1) Because they can— it is legal you know!  and  2) They have a need to (they have that answer).  Portola did finally back off the press in the 2nd half & dropped down into a zone, which allowed us to hold on to the ball for most of the 35 second shot clock and also let the clock run down on their last possession without shooting to finally end the game.  So even with these tactics the score (70-16) was not that close! Haha

“In Twenty Years of Coaching, I’ve Never Thought a Game Was Fixed, But… (You Gotta’ Read This)

“In twenty years of coaching, I’ve never thought a game was fixed, but tonight…” Those were a few of the words from Lassen High School Lady Grizzly head basketball coach Paul Moore, following Lassen Highs 69-57 NAL loss to West Valley High School, Thursday night, (1/22).

The Lassen High Lady Grizzlies built a 34-14 lead over the West Valley Lady Eagles, Thursday night at West Valley. (Before we go on, let us stress the at West Valley part of this story).

With Lassen leading 34-14, both teams had shot ten free throws. By the time the game ended, West Valley had shot 62 free throws, to Lassen’s 20, and the Eagles had a home victory in hand.

While I was not a personal attendee of this game, (but I have witnessed many a comeback),  I can’t keep myself from thinking something is terribly askew, and that no other stat is really worth discussing. Two teams, neither of which has a notable talent advantage (West Valley 7-10, Lassen 5-8). Home team down by 20. Free throw attempts even at ten apiece, and then BAM !. The visiting team loses it’s mind and sends the opponent to the free throw line 52 times… But the team leading by 20, shoots just ten free throws the  … Click the headline to continue reading this LSN Story

Lassen Grizzly Boys Soccer Team Edges Yreka

After Tuesday’s (1/20)  2-2 tie with Yreka, Lassen High head soccer coach, Dennis Michaels was not happy. “It was not a pretty match.’ Said Michaels following the contest. Thursday, (1/22), at Yreka, Michaels was much happier following Lassen’s 3-2 victory over the same Yreka Miners. “Much, much, much better.” Said the Grizzlies head coach.

The Grizzlies got two goals from sophomore, Jordan Guess and a third goal from Juan Castrejano in the teams 3-2 victory over Yreka. “Even if it had been a loss,” said Michaels, “it was a far better played game.” The win pushes Lassen’s NAL record to 3-2-1. Adrian Orozco and Gabriel Galvez were credited with assists for the Grizzlies.

The Grizzlies next face Corning High School at Riverside Park, Tuesday, Jan. 23rd. The Cardinals are undefeated on the year and beat Lassen 4-1 earlier this season. ” It’s a grudge match, for fun,” said Michaels, “and that’s the best kind of match.”
