Raucous Night of Basketball at Lassen College as Cougars Host Feather River in GVC Opener
Harsh feelings between Lassen College and Feather River College fans spilled onto the floor near the conclusion of the second game of the GVC hoops double-header between the rival schools, Wednesday night, (1/14) at the Lassen College Sports Complex.
In the night’s first game, the Lassen College Lady Cougars shook off a sluggish offensive start to pull away from Feather River for a 71-55 win. Lorena Torres hit a three pointer as time expired in the first half to give Lassen a 37-29 lead at the break. Australian stand-out Jessica Nolan poured in 14 of her game high 23 points in the second half to help the Lady Cougars pull away from Feather River and earn the 16 point victory. “We played pretty well defensively.” Said Lassen head coach Mark Naraeu, “We played hard and hustled all night.” Lassen’s Oceana Johnson, Julissa Reynoso and Savannah Carlo each scored 12 points as the Lady Cougars opened the conference schedule with a win.
In the night cap, the Golden Eagles of Feather River built a double digit lead in the first half and were able to with stand a late Lassen charge, holding off the Cougars for a 98-87 victory. Lady Vikings Use Fourth Quarter Rally to Knock Off Loyalton
The Herlong Lady Viking basketball team needed some late game heroics to avenge an early season loss to the Loyalton Grizzlies. Herlong out scored Loyalton 12-7 in the final period to defeat the Lady Grizzlies 24-23, Tuesday night, (1/13), in Loyalton.
Herlong got a monster effort from senior, Reanna Retterath in the come from behind win. Retterath finished the night with ten points, 11 rebounds, ten steals and six blocked shots. Tina Berry scored six of her eight points in the deciding fourth quarter. Andrea “Peanut” Owen was held scoreless by the Grizzly defense but still came up big with 14 rebounds, eight steals, seven blocked shots and six assists. The win was Herlong’s seventh in a row and improves the Lady Vikings record to 8-5. Loyalton defeated Herlong 36-31 on Dec. 17th. The Lady Vikings have not lost since.
Herlong opens Pioneer League play, Friday, Jan. 16th, at home against Princeton High School.

Grizzly Boys Dominate Anderson on the Soccer Pitch
If it were a prize fight, they would have stopped it but it was an NAL soccer match and Lassen had it’s way with the Anderson Cubs, winning 6-0, Tuesday, (1/13), at Anderson High School.
The Grizzlies were led by Gabriel Galvez, who recorded his second hat trick (3 goals) of the season. Lassen led 2-0 after the first half and cruised to the easy victory in the second half. “It was a good game for us,” said Lassen head coach Dennis Michaels, “a good first step.” Adrian Orozco, Luis Carillo and Milos Chibada each added goals for Lassen as the Grizzlies evened their record at 3-3 on the year. Lassen is now 1-2 in the NAL. The win snapped a two game losing skid for the Grizzlies.
Lassen will next face Central Valley, Thursday, Jan. 15th, at Riverside Park. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Central Valley.
Note:Galvez leads the NAL with ten goals scored.

Herlong Lady Vikings Win Sixth Straight
The Herlong Lady Viking basketball team used antother strong defensive performance against the visiting Greenville Lady Indians to run their record to 7-5 on the season.
Friday (1/09), the Herlong ladies allowed just ten Greenville points in a 32-10 victory. Monday night in Herlong, the Lady Vikings gave up only nine points while defeating the Indians 26-9. Andrea (Peanut) Owen matched Greenville’s scoring output with nine points of her own. Owen also led the game with 13 rebounds. Herlong’s Reanna Retterath tallied six points and 11 rebounds with Tina Berry chipping in another six points.
The Lady Vikings wrap up non-conference play, Tuesday night, Jan. 13th, at Loyalton High School. Herlong opens Pioneer League play Friday, Jan.16th, at home against Princeton High School. The Lady Vikings are looking for their third consecutive conference title.

Lassen High Wrestlers Compete in Nor-Cal Championships, Gals Wrestle in Napa
The Lassen High School varsity wrestling team battled 50 teams in the Nor-Cal Championship tournament held at Anderson High School, Jan.9th & 10th.

189 lbs. Darren Lee -3rd place.
215 lbs. Luke Peterson -7th place.
The Lassen girls wrestling team took part in the ASICS Napa Valley Girls Classic in Napa, Ca.

138 lbs. Johnnie Gable -5th place.
In a “mini” tournament in Napa, Lassen’s Kaelie Pena won first place at 165 lbs. while Desaree Readenour brought home a first place finish at 118 lbs.
Next up for the Lassen High wrestling team will be the Pleasant Valley junior varsity tournament, Saturday, Jan. 17th, in Chico, Ca.

Lady Vikings Use Stout Defense to Defeat Greenville
They say that defense wins championships, if so, the Herlong Lady Vikings could be on their way to big things this basketball season.
Friday, (1/09), Herlong traveled to Greenville for a showdown with the Indians. The Lady Vikings allowed just 10 Greenville points en-route to a 32-10 victory. Offensively for Herlong, Reanna Retterath had ten points with Andrea (Peanut) Owen adding eight points. Herlong has now won five straight games, improving their record to 6-5.
The same two teams will square off again, Monday, Jan. 12th, at Herlong High School.

Lassen Grizzlies Drop Back to Back Games in Oroville
After opening tournament play in Oroville with a victory over the host Oroville Tigers (1/08), the Lassen High basketball team dropped consecutive games to finish the tournament 1-2.
Friday, (1/09), the Grizzlies were defeated handily by the Foothill Cougars, 86-55. Jeremy Bowles paced the Grizzlies with 22 points. Saturday, (1/10), Las Plumas held cold shooting Lassen to just 45 points in a 61-45 win. Bowles was again Lassen’s leading scorer with 12 points. JP Faulkner had nine points. Lassen’s season record now stands at 9-6.
The Grizzlies will open NAL play Friday, Jan. 16th, at home against the Yreka Miners.

Lassen College Ladies End Pre-Season with Win
Head coach Mark Naraeu and the Lassen College Lady Cougar basketball team battled faulty time-keeping equipment as well as the Reedley Lady Tigers, Saturday, (1/10) at the Lassen College Sports Complex.
In a game that saw numerous delays (including one of nearly 30 minutes) due to a malfunctioning scoreboard, the Lady Cougars were able to collect themselves and defeat Reedley, 74-55. Four Lassen ladies scored in double figures, led by Oceana Johnson’s 18 points. Freshmen, Julissa Reynoso and Lorena Torres each had 13 points with Jessica Nolan adding 1o points. Lassen wraps up the non-conference schedule with a record of 10-9.
The Lassen ladies open Golden Valley Conference play, Wednesday, Jan. 14th, at home against Feather River College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Following the ladies contest, the Lassen College men will face Feather River in the conference opener for both teams.
The Feather River College women picked up a pair of wins at the Lassen College Sports Complex over the weekend. The Lady Eagles downed Merced and Reedley.
One hopes the scoreboard has been repaired before Wednesday evening.

Lady Grizzlies Drop Second Straight in West Valley
The Lassen High School Lady Grizzly basketball team rallied late, but came up short against the Shasta High Wolves on the final day of tournament play at West Valley, Saturday, (1/1o).
Lassen trailed the Wolves by ten points heading in to the fourth quarter but the Lassen ladies rally fell four points short with Shasta holding on for a 54-50 win. Carlotta Kloppenburg led Lassen with 14 points. Xochitl Salinasadded 12 points. Kloppenburg was named to the All-Tournament team. The loss drops Lassen to 5-6 on the year.
The Lady Grizzlies open NAL play Friday, Jan. 16th, at Yreka. Lassen’s next home game will be Tuesday, Jan. 20th, in the “Cave”.

Lady Grizzlies Fall Short Against West Valley
The Lassen High School Lady Grizzly basketball team saw it’s season record drop to 5-5, following a 53-44 semi-final loss to tournament host West Valley, Friday night, (1/09).
Lassen will wrap up tournament play at West Valley High School against the Shasta High Wolves, Saturday, Jan. 10th, at 2:00 p.m.
