Lady Grizzlies Advance to Soccer Title Game

The Lassen High Lady Grizzly soccer team defeated visiting West Valley High School, Tuesday, (2/24) at Riverside Park, earning Lassen a trip to the section championship match.

Lassen, the #2 seed, will face top ranked Sutter High School, Saturday, Feb. 28th, at Colusa High School. Sutter defeated Las Plumas to reach the finals. The Lady Grizzlies are 10-1-3, heading into the championship showdown. Sutter, (led by former Lassen College head women’s soccer coach, Jason Spain) is 17-1. 

The championship match is scheduled to get underway at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28th, at Colusa High School.

Enterprise Win Sends Lady Grizzlies to Paradise

The Lassen High Lady Grizzly basketball team found out their playoff fate Tuesday night, (2/24) without even taking the floor.

The Enterprise High School victory over Pleasant Valley, (2/24) sends the Lassen ladies (8-14, #6) packing to Paradise, (17-8, #3) for part of a playoff doubleheader, Friday, Feb. 27th.

The Lady Grizzlies will take the floor at 6:30 p.m. followed by the Lassen boys (13-12, #5) and Paradise (7-19, #4) at 8:00 p.m.

Conference Opener for Cougar Baseball Team Postponed

The Lassen College baseball team was scheduled to open Golden Valley Conference play today, (2/25) against College of the Siskiyous, but due to unplayable conditions, the games have been postponed.

The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played in Weed, Ca. but the Siskiyous field was deemed unplayable. The games were then moved to Shasta College in Redding, Ca. but the recent storms negated that possibility.

The games have now been re-scheduled to take place Friday, Feb. 27th, at Memorial Park, in Susanville, Ca. as part of a three game series that will also feature a single game between the two teams on Saturday, Feb. 28th. Game times for both days is 12:00 p.m. with the doubleheader set for Friday. Lassen is 0-2 in limited pre-season action.

Season Comes to an End for Lassen High Boys Soccer Team

The Lassen High Grizzly boys soccer team saw it’s season come to an end, Tuesday, (2/24) with a 4-1 semi-final playoff loss to visiting Wheatland High School.

“We had plenty of opportunities.” Said Lassen head coach Dennis Michaels. “The ball just didn’t drop and we didn’t make it happen.” Lassen wraps up the season with an 8-4-2 record while Wheatland advances to the section title match. 

Note: This season marks the sixth consecutive yearthat coach Michaels and the Lassen boys have advanced to at least the section semi-finals.

Lassen High Soccer Teams to Host Playoff Openers, Tuesday, Feb. 24th.

The Lassen High Grizzly and Lady Grizzly soccer teams will host CIF semi-final playoff games, Tuesday, Feb. 24th at Riverside Park in Susanville, Ca.

The playoff doubleheader will begin with the Lassen ladies facing familiar foe, West Valley High School. This will be the fourth meeting of the year between the two schools. Lassen was 1-0-2 against the Eagles in the regular season. Lassen, who has not played since defeating Central Valley on Feb. 5th, have a 9-1-3 record for the year while West Valley is 11-1-2, including a 3-0 victory over Corning in the teams first round playoff game, (2/20).

The Lassen boys will host Wheatland High School in Tuesday’s second game. The Grizzlies are 8-3-2 and, as with the Lassen ladies, have not played a match since the teams regular season finale against Central Valley nearly three weeks ago. Wheatland (4-8-2) advanced to the semi-finals with a 5-2 upset win over third seeded Las Plumas, (2/20). This will be the first “official” meeting of the year between the two teams. The two squads did play a “mini-match” at a pre-season Jamboree. While the final score of that contest is not an official result, Wheatland did defeat the Grizzlies.

Lady Cougars to Open Playoffs at Home

The Lassen College Lady Cougar basketball team heads into the 2009 California Community College basketball playoffs as the #8 seed, this the result of the selection committee meeting that took place, Monday, (2/23). 

The top eight spot earns the Lady Cougars a home game against #9 Skyline College, Friday night, Feb. 27th, at the Lassen College Sports Complex. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. This will be the first meeting of the year between the two teams, but there is some history between the two schools.

“We don’t know a lot about them this year,” said Lassen head coach Mark Nareau, “but they’re more of a perimeter team offensively, with their two guards being their leading scorers.” Lassen wrapped up the regular season, Saturday, (2/21) with a 79-50 win over College of the Redwoods. The Lassen ladies finished the regular season with an 18-11 record, and a share of the Golden Valley Conference title.

“I think we’re peaking at the right time.” Said Naraeu. “Defensively, we’ve only allowed about 50 points a game over the last three games, and offensively, we’re getting out and pushing the ball up the floor as well as we have all year.”

Six Grizzly Wrestlers Advance to Masters

Lassen High School wrestlers competed in the Division I Championship Tournament this past weekend, (2/21-2/22) and six Grizzlies qualified to wrestle in the North Section CIF Masters Tournament, Feb. 27th & 28th.

Lassen Qualifiers

105 lbs. Trevor Gable – 4th place

127 lbs. Byron Treece – 6th place

130 lbs. Taft Memmott – 6th place

137 lbs. Kyle Gibson - 7th place

191 lbs. Darren Lee – 5th place

217 lbs. Luke Peterson – 3rd place

The top six finishers in each weight class qualify for the Masters tournament. Kyle Gibson will travel to the competition as an alternate.

Lassen College Ladies Wrap-Up Regular Season With Win and Awards

Head coach Mark Naraeu and the Lassen College Lady Cougar basketball team finished up the regular season Saturday, (2/21) with a road win over GVC doormat, College of the Redwoods.

Lassen was led by Jessica Nolan’s 22 points as the Lady Cougars cruised to a 79-50 victory. Savannah Carlo scored 21 for visiting Lassen, while point guard Lorena Torres added ten points. The win clinches a piece of the Golden Valley Conference title for the Lady Cougars. Both Lassen and Shasta College finished the conference schedule with 8-2 records. (The teams split their two regular season games). Lassen’s final overall season record is 18-11. 

Both teams must now await word from the playoff selection committee, which will meet, Monday, Feb. 23rd, in Sacramento. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. “I see us somewhere between the number seven and ten seeds.” Said Naraeu. The top eight seeds receive opening round home games.

Sunday, (2/22), GVC individual awards were handed out and Lassen players earned their share of the hardware. Jessica Nolan was named the Most Valuable Player of the conference. Lady Cougars Split with American River College

The Lassen College Lady Cougar softball team split a pair games with American River College, Saturday, (2/21).

The Lassen ladies dropped the opener of the twin-bill 6-3, but rallied for a 3-0 win in the night-cap. Lassen is now 2-6 on the season. The Lady Cougars were scheduled to play two games against Sacramento City College, Sunday, (2/22) but those games were rained out.

Lassen Grizzly Basketball Team to Open Playoffs at Paradise

The Lassen Grizzly basketball team will travel to Paradise High School to open the 2009 CIF playoffs.

The Grizzlies earned the #5 seed and will face #4 Paradise, at Paradise. The date has not yet been determined. It may be Thursday, Feb. 26th, or Friday, Feb. 27th, depending on how the rest of the playoff brackets take shape. We will update as the information becomes available.

Lassen finished the regular season, 13-12. Despite a 7-18 record, Paradise was seeded ahead of Lassen. (Don’t get me started on that, and yes I am well versed in the power points system, but…).
