Lady Cougars Get Big Win on the Road

The Lassen College Lady Cougar basketball team picked up a much needed win, Wednesday (2/11), on the road against long time rival Butte College. 

Lassen got 20 points from freshman guard, Oceana Johnson as the Lady Cougars defeated Butte 63-51. Lorena Torres scored 16 points to help Lassen improve to 6-2 in Golden Valley Conference play. The Lady Cougars return home for a rematch with Shasta College, Saturday, Feb. 14th. Shasta handed Lassen one of it’s two conference losses in an earlier GVC match-up. That game was played on Shasta’s home floor in Redding, Ca.

Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Lassen College Sports Complex.

Schedule Change for Lassen High Basketball

The NAL basketball games between the Lassen High Grizzlies and West Valley High School have been moved to, Thursday, Feb. 12th.

The games were originally scheduled to be played, Friday, Feb. 13th, but due to an impending storm front, the schools made the decision to move the games up one day.

The Lady Grizzlies will now host West Valley, Thursday, Feb. 12th, in the “Cave,” while the Lassen boys will travel to West Valley the same evening. Both Lassen squads are 1-6 in the NAL.

Lassen High boys Lose at Home

The Lassen Grizzly basketball team dropped a 74-63 decision to the Corning Cardinals, Tuesday (2/10), at home in the “Cave.”

The loss was Lassen’s fifth in a row and drops the Grizzlies to 1-6 in NAL play. Lassen is 10-12 overall.

Lady Grizzlies Fall in Corning

The Lassen High Lady Grizzly basketball team traveled to Corning, Tuesday (2/10) for an NAL showdown with the Corning High School Cardinals. Lassen hung tough, trailing the first place Cardinals by just four points at the half, but Corning pulled away in the second half for a 62-46 win. 

Carlotta Kloppenburg paced Lassen with 17 points and nine rebounds. The loss drops the Lassen ladies to 1-6 in conference play and 7-12 overall.

The junior varsity Lassen ladies defeated Corning by one point, hitting a pair of free throws with .02 seconds left in regulation. The Lassen freshmen were defeated by Corning.

Herlong Lady Vikings Clinch Pioneer League Championship

The Lady Vikings of Herlong High, clinched their third straight Pioneer League championship, Tuesday night, (2/10), with a 30-21 victory over Downieville.

Herlong was able to overcome a shaky offensive shooting night to defeat Downieville High, and clinch the teams third consecutive Pioneer League championship with defense and perseverance.

Herlong, playing it’s third game in five nights, hit just 12 of 56 field goals on the night, but Herlong’s stellar defense enabled the team to go into the locker-room at halftime tied with Downieville 11-11. The Lady Vikings found their legs in the second half, outscoring Downieville 19-10 to secure the victory, and a third straight conference championship.

Tina Berry led Herlong with nine points. Reanna Retterath had yet another double-double, this time with 13 rebounds and ten blocked shots. Retterath also contributed eight points to the Herlong victory. Andrea “Peanut” Owen chipped in with eight points.

The Lady Vikings wrap up the regular season, Friday night, Feb. 13th, at home against Elk Creek.
