Lady Cougars to Open Playoffs at Home

The Lassen College Lady Cougar basketball team heads into the 2009 California Community College basketball playoffs as the #8 seed, this the result of the selection committee meeting that took place, Monday, (2/23).

The top eight spot earns the Lady Cougars a home game against #9 Skyline College, Friday night, Feb. 27th, at the Lassen College Sports Complex. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. This will be the first meeting of the year between the two teams, but there is some history between the two schools.

“We don’t know a lot about them this year,” said Lassen head coach Mark Nareau, “but they’re more of a perimeter team offensively, with their two guards being their leading scorers.” Lassen wrapped up the regular season, Saturday, (2/21) with a 79-50 win over College of the Redwoods. The Lassen ladies finished the regular season with an 18-11 record, and a share of the Golden Valley Conference title.

“I think we’re peaking at the right time.” Said Naraeu. “Defensively, we’ve only allowed about 50 points a game over the last three games, and offensively, we’re getting out and pushing the ball up the floor as well as we have all year.”

As for the history between the two teams, Skyline knocked the Lady Cougars out of the playoffs a year ago with the benefit of a controversial foul called against Lassen in the games final seconds. Skyline would hit the deciding free throws to end Lassen’s season.

Barring upsets in other playoff match-ups, this will be the only home playoff game for the Lassen ladies. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27th, at the Lassen College Sports Complex.

Note: After being named the Most Valuable Player of the Golden Valley Conference, (2/22), Lassen standout, Jessica Nolan was a unanimous selection to the All-California State women’s basketball team.
