Simon Honored for Second Time This Season

djFormer Lassen High and Lassen College pitcher, and current New Mexico State University stand-out, Daniel (DJ) Simon earned Western Athletic League Pitcher of the Week honors for the week of May 11-17.
Simon, a junior, threw seven shut-out innings to earn his first complete game victory of the season as the Aggies crushed Louisiana Tech, 16-0. The win improved Simon’s record to 9-1 for the season. It is the second time this season Simon has earned the award, having been honored for the week of April 13-19.
Simon and his New Mexico State teammates open WAC Tournament play in Hawaii, Thursday, May 21st.

Cougars End Season With a Split

The Lassen College baseball team wrapped up the 2009 season, Thursday, (4/30) with a doubleheader split with the Shasta College Knights at Memorial Park in Susanville, Ca. 

Game 1

Shasta – 20
Lassen – 8
Lassen’s Zach Garcia was 3 x 3 with a home run and 3 RBI.

Game 2

Lassen – 9
Shasta – 8
Former Lassen High ace, Blake Nahlen went seven innings to earn the win. First baseman Mike Hardy was 2 x 4 with three RBI and Brett Workman drove in two Lassen runs. 
Lassen finishes the season with a 9-23 record while the Knights first game win clinched second place in the Golden Valley Conference behind Feather River College.

“Good Guys Win”

“Good guys win” was the text message left by Lassen College head baseball coach Cort Cortez after the Cougars snapped a ten game losing skid, Wednesday, (4/29) at Shasta College.

Ryan Shepherd
threw a complete game to earn his third win of the season. Lassen is now 8-22 overall (8-20 in the Golden Valley Conference). The Cougars wrap up the season Thursday, April 30th, with a pair of home games against Shasta. The doubleheader is scheduled to get underway at 12:00 p.m. at Memorial Park.

Feather River Rocks Lassen at Memorial Park

The Feather River College baseball team continued it’s dominance of the Golden Valley Conference with another resounding win, Wednesday (4/22). This time, the Lassen College Cougars were the victims.  

Feather River – 23
Lassen – 9
Feather River jumped out to a 9-1 lead after two innings. Lassen rallied to pull to within 10-8 but the Cougar pitching could not contain the Feather River bats. Feather River’s Andy Quiring was 6 x 7 with three RBI. Outfielder Niko Saladis was 4 x 5 with three RBI. Lassen’s Daveron Ross was 2 x 4 with three RBI.
Feather River improves to 35-3 (24-1 in the GVC) while Lassen drops to 7-20 (7-18).
The same two teams will play a doubleheader, Saturday, April 25th, in Quincy, Ca. Play starts at 12:00 p.m.

Cougars lose to Redwoods in Extra Innings

College of the Redwoods completed a three game Golden Valley Conference sweep of the Lassen College Cougar baseball team, Saturday, (4/18) in Eureka, Ca.

Redwoods – 8
Lassen – 7
(10 innings)
Lassen tied the score at 5-5 with a run in the top of the ninth inning. The Cougars scored a pair of runs in the 10th inning, but Redwoods rallied for three runs in the bottom of the 10th to earn the win.

Lassen College Baseball & Softball Teams Struggle on the Coast

The Lassen College baseball and softball teams faced College of the Redwoods, Friday (4/17) in Eureka, Ca. and both teams could not get out of town soon enough. Actually, the baseball team had to stay for a third game, Saturday.

Butte College Completes Sweep of Cougars

The Lassen College baseball team wrapped up it’s three game series with the Butte College Roadrunners with a pair of games, Saturday, (4/11) at Memorial Park in Susanville, Ca.

Game 1

Butte – 7
Lassen – 1
Lassen committed six errors in the loss. Lassen’s Tommy O’Brien was 3 x 3.

Game 2

Butte – 9
Lassen – 8
The Cougars jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two innings but Lassen’s pitching could not close the door. Butte completed their comeback with three runs in the eighth inning. Zach Garcia was 5 x 5 for the Cougars. Daveron Ross was 3 x 5 with four RBI in the loss. Lassen is now 7-16, (7-14 in the Golden Valley Conference).

Cougars Drop Series Opener to Butte

The Lassen College Cougar baseball team finally got their three game series with the Butte Roadrunners underway, Friday, (4/10) at Memorial Park in Susanville, Ca.
The series had been scheduled to begin Wednesday, (4/08) but was postponed due to weather.

Butte – 9
Lassen – 6
The Roadrunners jumped out to an early 6-1 lead and Lassen could never completely climb back into the contest.
Lassen head coach, Cort Cortez, noted the performance of pitcher, Sparky Lively, who threw seven strong innings out of the bullpen to give the Cougars a chance. Lassen falls to 7-14, (7-12 in the Golden Valley Conference). The same two teams will play a doubleheader, Saturday, April 11th, at Memorial Park. Start time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.

Lassen College Baseball & Softball Games Postponed

The Lassen College baseball and softball games scheduled to be played in Susanville, Ca. Wednesday, (4/08) have been postponed due to threatening weather.

The Cougar baseball team was scheduled to host Butte College at Memorial Park. That game has been rescheduled for Friday, April 10th at 2:00 p.m. The two teams will then play a doubleheader, Saturday, April 11th at Memorial Park.
The Lady Cougar softball team was set to host a Golden Valley Conference doubleheader against Shasta College at the Lassen College Softball Complex. No make-up date has been announced for the softball games.

Cougars Split Two With Siskiyous

The Lassen College Cougar baseball team scored 32 runs in a Golden Valley Conference doubleheader with College of the Siskiyous, Saturday, (3/04) in Weed, Ca. But all those runs only added up to one win.

“We did have the ball at the eight yard line as time expired,” joked Lassen head coach Cort Cortez, “but the pass was broken up in the end zone.”
