LHS, LCC Basketball Update
The Lassen High Grizzlies advanced to the finals of the Anderson High Holiday Invitational tournament with wins in the first two rounds. (See previous posts)
Championship Game
West Valley – 75
Lassen – 28
Lassen falls to 6-5 in the preseason.
Commentary from Lassen head coach Leo Bennett…
In the Championship game at the Anderson Invitational we came out flat and stayed flat throughout. We went down 28 to 75 to West Valley. It is a game that will resonate in my head. More importantly though it is a game that I want the players to move away from not look back upon. We made great strides as individual basketball players and became a more cohesive team during the Anderson Tournament. One game will not define us as a team or deter us from our goals. As a coaching staff and players, we will use the upcoming practices over the Christmas break to continue to improve and mold into the team we want to be when league begins.
We will be at home against Las Plumas on the January 4th. All of us look forward to playing in front of a great Lassen crowd.
JP Faulkner was named to the five player All Tournament Team.

Nareau to Take Over Lassen College Men’s Basketball Program… Schaffer to Fill Women’s Position
After accumulating 234 wins as head women’s basketball coach at Lassen Community College, Mark Nareau was, “mildly” searching for a new challenge. Monday, (06/08) he found it.
Lassen Community College President, Dr. Douglas Houston, confirmed to Lassen Sports Network (LSN), that Nareau would be taking over the Lassen College men’s basketball program, replacing Ben Riley, who stepped down in May.
Filling the void left by Nareau’s move to the men’s program will be Dorinda Schaffer. It will be Schaffer’s second stint as the Lady Cougars head coach. Schaffer led Lassen to the final eight in 1994, losing to eventual state champion, L.A. Harbor.
“I’m really excited.” Said Schaffer in a phone conversation. “I love to coach at the junior college level. It really challenges me.” Schaffer again stated, “I’m truly excited to be back coaching the Lassen College women.”
Schaffer has also worked as an assistant coach under Nareau and former Lassen College head coach Gary Kloppenburg, and has been the head coach of the Lassen High School Lady Grizzlies.
Having crafted a winning percentage of .667 over an eleven year career as head coach of the Lady Cougars, Nareau takes over a men’s program that has seen the postseason just once in the last six years. Asked … Click the headline to continue reading this LSN Story
