The Cougars played without head coach Mark Nareau, who was handed a five game suspension by the Golden Valley Conference for recruiting violations. Nareau issued this statement, Wednesday.

The Golden Valley Conference has determined that a recruiting violation was committed with regard to the recruitment of two student athletes from Australia. I have been sanctioned in the form of being suspended for the first five Golden Valley Conference games. While this was an unintentional violation, I accept the sanction and will use this as a learning experience.

Editor’s note:While I have been aware of this situation for some time, I feel the sanctions are severe, and question the manner in which the situation was dealt.

Harsh Words Exchanged as Undermanned Lassen Falls to Chabot

The Lassen College Cougar basketball team showed up at Chabot College (Hayward, Ca.), Tuesday, (12/29) with just seven available players. By game time they were down to six, and at the conclusion of Lassen’s game with host Chabot, head coach Mark Nareau was barely able to put five players on the floor.
Final Score
Chabot – 102
Lassen – 51
Nareau said following the game that “his kids played hard the entire 40 minutes,” and that he was “proud of their effort.”
Lassen was limited to just the seven players due to scheduling and campus housing conflicts.
The game was delayed in the second half as Nareau and Chabot head coach, Denny Aye, reportedly engaged in a heated, verbal exchange on the sideline. According to one source at the scene, “without question,” Chabot was intentionally running up the score.
Lassen will play it’s final preseason game, Wednesday, December 30th, against Cabrillo College. The Cougars open Golden Valley Conference play, January 13th, at Shasta College.

LHS, LCC Basketball Update

The Lassen High Grizzlies advanced to the finals of the Anderson High Holiday Invitational tournament with wins in the first two rounds. (See previous posts)
Championship Game
West Valley – 75
Lassen – 28
Lassen falls to 6-5 in the preseason.
Commentary from Lassen head coach Leo Bennett…
In the Championship game at the Anderson Invitational we came out flat and stayed flat throughout. We went down 28 to 75 to West Valley. It is a game that will resonate in my head. More importantly though it is a game that I want the players to move away from not look back upon. We made great strides as individual basketball players and became a more cohesive team during the Anderson Tournament. One game will not define us as a team or deter us from our goals. As a coaching staff and players, we will use the upcoming practices over the Christmas break to continue to improve and mold into the team we want to be when league begins.
We will be at home against Las Plumas on the January 4th. All of us look forward to playing in front of a great Lassen crowd.
JP Faulkner was named to the five player All Tournament Team.

Lassen College Softball Player Earns Scholarship

The Chinese Softball Foundation of Reno, announced today that standout Lassen College softball pitcher Chang Xiao Xue has received an athletic scholarship to attend Utah State University, a NCAA D1 college located in Logan, Utah, and has signed a letter of intent to become a Utah State Aggie.
Chang, from Beijing, China, was the youngest member of the Chinese National Softball Team before coming to the United States.

She plans to major in Human Resource Management, and to work towards a Masters Degree in Business upon graduation.“I made the decision to come to the United States three years ago” says Xiao Xue. “I wanted to get a degree because being an athlete in China, I only played softball and didn’t get much education. I love softball, but wanted an education, too.”
