Lassen High Rally Comes Up Short

Information submitted by Lassen head coach, Leo Bennett

The Lassen Grizzly boys basketball team opened Northern Athletic League play in Yreka, Friday, (1/15).
Final Score
Yreka – 63
Lassen – 59
Three Overtimes

We were down 13 heading into the fourth quarter and battled back to tie it at the end of regulation. It took three overtimes to decide the winner, with a packed house at their feet.
Failed free throws, (1 for 7 in overtime), proved too much to overcome. Yreka scored on a put back and was fouled to go up three with .38 seconds left. We missed a layup and were forced to foul.  Yreka converted one of two to take the lead by four in the waning seconds.
Lassen Scoring

> Jordan Vial – 11 points
> Brandon Whitestone – 10 points
> Andy Pustejovsky – 10 points
> Jarred Bertotti – 8 points
> JP Faulkner – 6 points
> Torin Thompson – 6 points
> Jacob Estes – 5 points
> David Wagner – 2 points
Lassen, 8-8, (0-1 NAL), will host, Corning High School, Tuesday, January 19th, in the “Cave.”

Lassen Grizzly Basketball Team Wraps Up Preseason With a Win

Submitted by Lassen head coach, Leo Bennett

Saturday (1/09) in the Consolation Championship at the Oroville High School Burnam Classic.
Final Score

Lassen – 66
Oroville – 61
Andy Pustejovsky scored 22 points. Brandon Whitestone had 17 points and nine rebounds. Jarred Bertotti scored 16 points with 11 rebounds. Jordan Vial had 8 points and six rebounds.
Great way to end the preseason with a win over a Division 2 opponent.
Andy (Pustejovsky) showed he has the tools to be an outside threat, hitting five 3-pointers, along with using his speed to get to the rim. Brandon Whitestone put together a superb game, getting to the rim with authority, (dunk in traffic during the 3rd quarter).
Sophmore, Jarred Bertotti held down the power forward spot, rebounding with a vengence and showing a soft touch at 15 feet. Jordan Vial proved to be a force in the middle, changing shots and getting four blocks, along with posting up strong.
JP Faulkner did a great job running the point, despite spending most of the night face guarded. Torin Thompson played with good energy in the post.
That sums up the game, “energy,” something that was missing in our loss to Las Plumas at home, (1/05), and something we have been focusing on attaining and keeping. We look forward to the four practice days this week leading up to league play.

LHS, LCC Basketball Update

The Lassen High Grizzlies advanced to the finals of the Anderson High Holiday Invitational tournament with wins in the first two rounds. (See previous posts)
Championship Game
West Valley – 75
Lassen – 28
Lassen falls to 6-5 in the preseason.
Commentary from Lassen head coach Leo Bennett…
In the Championship game at the Anderson Invitational we came out flat and stayed flat throughout. We went down 28 to 75 to West Valley. It is a game that will resonate in my head. More importantly though it is a game that I want the players to move away from not look back upon. We made great strides as individual basketball players and became a more cohesive team during the Anderson Tournament. One game will not define us as a team or deter us from our goals. As a coaching staff and players, we will use the upcoming practices over the Christmas break to continue to improve and mold into the team we want to be when league begins.
We will be at home against Las Plumas on the January 4th. All of us look forward to playing in front of a great Lassen crowd.
JP Faulkner was named to the five player All Tournament Team.
