Mulcahy’s Marathon Challenge

In the last year Lassen College welding instructor John Mulcahy has done what some men only dream of.

After 30 years of running, first in the Army as part of his physical training and then later as a way to stay in condition, the 58 year old Mulcahy decided to begin training to run marathons, a demanding test of endurance and athleticism.

Mulcahy’s first marathon was last December’s California International, running from Folsom to the State Capitol in Sacramento.

Part of the appeal for Mulcahy is travelling to different locations and meeting new people with similar objectives. He says that running marathons is, “one of the best activities I’ve ever gotten involved with.”

His first time out he came in with a respectable 4 hours, 52 minutes and 38 seconds.

In March Mulcahy ran in the Napa Valley Marathon which follows a course through the vineyards from Calistoga down to Napa. Despite drenching rain for the duration of the marathon Mulcahy improved his time by 31 minutes over the Folsom run.
